Design and Construction of Parallel Taxiway and Ramps, Bagram Air Base

Project scope included site adapt work, topographic surveys and geotechnical studies, preparation of 100% design, water well drilling, water, potable water storage tanks, fully secured and guarded (24/7) Life Support Area for 200+ workers, concrete demolition, site preparation, construction of concrete and asphalt areas including taxiways aprons and the construction of a 1 mile long two‐way roadway(MRAP Rated), construction of site drainage, culverts, drop inlets, and airfield lighting system inclusive of power generation, medium and high voltage distribution, design procurement and erection of flood lights around the hot cargo pad. A total of 140,370 m3 excavation was completed.
There were two batch plants with a total capacity of: 170 cbm/h. Approximately 55000 m3 concrete and 10000 tons of asphalt was placed by the end of the project. 11 inset runway lights, 288 taxiway elevated lights, 4 taxiway end lights, 320 (L867, L868 type) basecans, 14000 mt 50 mm pvc conduits, 21000 mt wire were also used in the project. There was also more than 300,000 m3 of earth excavated on the taxiway and aprons project. The team has experience in excavation and hauling work on airbases and is very familiar with work around airfield critical features. The average number of workers included in the project was 130. Maximum number of workers was more than 200.
SERKA encountered tough weather conditions and airfield traffic. SERKA overcame these problems by double shift work and applying more aggressive and tighter schedule. SERKA completed the project on time with “1,000,000 man‐hours without a lost time accident”. SERKA’s performance was outstanding regarding the quality and time concerns. SERKA also had successful site management and personnel and was rewarded with Certif cate of Appreciation from USACE.
